As part of any new building design or existing building upgrade, all new works must comply with Australian Building Codes Board “National Construction Code”. The National Construction Code (NCC) is building regulatory legislation and is legally binding in all Australian States and Territories.
ECONIC can assist property owners and developers to comply with certain parts of the NCC, in particular Section J of the NCC. The function of Section J of the NCC is to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions from buildings. NCC Section J reports are mandatory for all non-residential buildings (i.e. Class 2 to 9 buildings) as part of the Development Application (DA) process. To comply with Section J of the NCC; the building design can either comply via meeting all the prescriptive Deemed-to-Satisfy (DTS) provisions of the NCC, or via an Alternative Solution (AS) which using Verification through Building energy simulation modelling. A combination of the two can be performed to allow for certain areas of non-compliance. ECONIC can perform verification compliance of the Performance Requirements of Section J (Energy Efficiency) of the current NCC, using both Deemed-to-Satisfy Methods or via an Alternative Solution. |
Should an Alternative Solution be required, an energy simulation of the building would be carried out to check that the total energy consumption under the prescribed operating conditions will consume the same or less amount of a reference building (Verification Methods). The reference building is the intended building design using compliant deemed-to-satisfy fabric, glazing, and equipment.
ECONIC can provide advice on sections J1-J3 regarding Building fabric, glazing and sealing, and advise on any non-compliance within design documentation stage. Advice can also be provided on Sections J5-J8, which relate to Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC), artificial lighting and power, hot water services, and maintenance provisions relating to a proposed development. ECONIC uses approved software to assist in demonstrating compliance by evaluating the annual energy consumption of a particular design. The NCC Verification Methods provide flexibility where the prescribed Deemed-to-Satisfy Provisions do not work for certain building designs. In addition, the NCC Verification Methods can allow for innovation and better use of all of the building’s fabric and services to make the building energy efficient.
